’90s Beauty Trends and How to Wear Them Now
It’s no secret that the glorious ‘90s have been having a bit of resurgence for some time now. From gleaming metallic eye shadow to lashings of lip liner and neutral lip tones (yes we’re talking about Heather Shimmer), we take a look back at some of the best beauty moments of the 1990s and how you can apply them to your make-up routine 20 years on.
NEUTRAL LIPS (AND ALL THE LIP LINER)
If we’re being completely honest, we’re a little bit in love with this look. The ‘90s saw brown lips complete with either a dose of shimmer or a serious matte finish – Drew Barrymore and Sarah-Michelle Gellar had this look nailed. Modernise the look with sheer or gloss finish nude shades such as YSL Rouge Volupte Shine Lipstick in Beige Instinct, much more wearable and less hyperthermia-chic.
BEAUTIFUL BRUNETTES
Brunettes reigned in the ‘90s. We’re talking Kate Moss, Courtney Cox, Demi Moore and Liv Tyler. And guess what? The brunette is back. Say goodbye to highlights and balayage hair and hello to a rainbow of pigmented bruenette hues including warm hazelnut, chestnurt brown and chocolate caramel. It’s like browsing the DIY hair aisle at your local pharamacy all over again.
METALLIC EYE SHADOW
Gwen Stefani was never one to shy away from metallic make-up during the ‘90s, same goes for the Spice Girls, Jeniffer Lopez and Claire Danes. The order of the day was cool ice shades with silvery undertones. Today, metallic eyes have grown-up. Seen on the runways at New York Fashion Week, from warm glitter details at Carmen Marc Valvo to dusty silver liner at Giulietta. Try the look for yourself with Mac’s Sparkle Pigment in Melon.
